ART // DANCE // ACTION                                             YOU’VE BEEN KER-PLUNKED

St Germain - St Germain

In light of the Bill Clinton’s swag thread, I revisited my favourite/ most listened to albums of all time. It was the first vinyl I ever got and the most turned of my LP’s. St Germain’s 2015 self-titled album.

Parisian musician, curator and composer Ludovic Navarre has many an alias, but as St Germain, he has been at the forefront of many musical movements, constantly adapting from project to project. From the French House in the 90s-2000s, to Nu jazz, right through to this eponymous 8 track work; without him Daft Punk, AIR and Dimitri From Paris may not have rose to notoriety.

In this work, Malian musicians fuse the traditional sounds of the kora, balafon and n’goni, with the pulsating, reverberated European style keys, bass and beat. A blissful unity point of rich and soulful musical cultures, to be both adsorbed and danced to. Existing in a divine space within and outside of labels; timeless. ‘Real Blues’ sets the voice of Lightning Hopkins to ecstatic percussion, need I say anymore.
